| When old becomes too old it can also become the maintenance
department's worst nightmare. This was the story when
AmeriPride Uniform Service contacted
Water Systems of Wichita, KS. The one time trusty water softener
that served the facility for years began leaking from one of the
metal tanks. After a weld job or two to stop the leak the valve nest
started fatiguing and needed valve and diaphragm kits as well as
internal parts. The decision was made to take the leaking side off
line, this cut 50% of the usable softening capacity. With business
continuing to grow, softening an ever-increasing amount of water was
becoming a problem. Their solution:
Plant management with chief engineer Justin
Hus chose to install a new twin tank
water softener and gave the order to put in the newest and best.
Some of the particulars are:
1. Structural fibers no rust poly and
fiberglass tanks in the 4 foot diameter by 8 foot high size with 40
cubic feet of softening resin in each.
2. Top mounted 3" in/out control valves with
hydraulically balanced piston for smooth cycling operation.
3. This twin tank alternating softeners
regeneration cycle is governed by a single gallon meter that
responds to gallons used. In this instance 150,000 gallons of soft
water can be used from one tank before it triggers the 40-second
switch to the other 150,000-gallon side. Continuous Soft Water 24/7
4. All of this plus up to 280 gallons per
minute flow.
